The MoodBoard

Or, staying focused on your goals.

I usually want to do a lot of things. So here’s a tool you can use to stay focused, it doesn’t make you do the things you want to, but it helps you remember where to put your attention on; to not get out of the way.

Obviously as I’ve said before, that’s not magic; commitment and perseverance are needed.

Moodboards can have the duration you want them to, because you are able to desire different things in different moments. It works in this moment , but your goals could change over time. When it comes to me, I create monthly moodboards, but just in this case and because I want to do big things I've created one for two months (feb - mar). In April I'll create a new one with my new goals.

Having said that, let’s get into business and let’s do a moodboard:

  1. Write down EVERYTHING you want to do in detail; Hobbies, works, self growth...
  2. Give them a grade of priority in your life. For example from levels 1 to 3; less options, easier to choose one. Don't make a list of ten levels.
Do this before the next step. It makes you think about what is really important to you. How much do I really want it?
There could also be “non productive” things that you really want to do for your entertainment, you can add them too.

  3. Only keep the things with a number of priority smaller than '2' (1 or 2). Create a new list with what you have left. If you have more than eight activities, prioritize and remove them until you get less than 8.
  4. Now think to yourself 'what can I do in the next (your deadline)?' f.e.: for me 'what can I do in the next month?'. Another question is ‘can it wait?'.
It doesn't matter if your goal is due within one year, the key is knowing what to do in the time you have chosen to complete the task. I mean, what can I do now to achieve that thing in the future?
For example if you want to create a scent, but now it is not that important to you, it can wait.

  5. Delete those things that can wait. Now you will have 5 or 6 things to do. That makes you able to have time for all of them.
  6. Choose the things that you want to do that are easier or require minor effort. Set them a start for example.
  7. Choose those things that will take a long time. Don't be afraid, step by step. But this helps you to know how much effort you will need in the future.
  8. Now the most enjoyable part, it's time to draw. Take a piece of paper, this is your canvas.
Grid 5 cols in it and 7 rows.
Depending on how important the task is, make bigger or smaller cells. Some sizes could be 3x3, 2x1, 1x1... And organise it as you wish.

  9. You can write the activity or search for drawings to represent it.
  10. (Optional) Now you can draw your moodboard digitally.
